Opal Dragon

Opal Dragon is a 72 × 48 in. stained resin window made as a private commission. It shows a fire-breathing dragon over mountains, three moons, a river and towered villages. Each cell of a black outline matrix was filled by hand with tinted, pearlescent and holographic-flake resin. Behind the panel is a grid of LED matrix panels with power supplies and controller boards, so different parts of the scene can take different colors at once, from an all-lavender sky to a red sky with green wings. The cured panel was surfaced on a CNC router and set in a deep black box with perforated vent grilles. Process photos date from August 2023, and the piece was hung on a wall cleat in a home on Aug 21, 2023.
